How we’re improving UK security and making the country safer

Introduction

At Zaizi, we’re on a mission to make the UK the best and safest place to live and work.

For over 15 years, we’ve worked with government departments to design, build, and sustain user-centred digital services that deliver policy outcomes, improve operations and ultimately keep the country safe.

We understand the unique challenges departments in border and national security face, like enabling secure cross-department information sharing, or creating a safe but frictionless border. That’s why, in every project, we take a user-centred, collaborative and iterative approach. We put people first in everything we do. We work closely with our clients and their users to interrogate complex problems, uncover the best solution, build the right secure service, and ensure its ongoing success.

Underpinning it all is our commitment to clients; digital government is hard, together we’ll succeed. It means we add value beyond the contract with our flexibility, expertise, clarity and direction. It reflects our experience helping government clients overcome challenges and deliver impactful outcomes.

We’ve created this ebook to share some of the exceptional things we’ve done with our clients. If, after reading it, you think we’re the kind of people who could make a difference to your work, we’d be more than happy to talk.

Creating secure and frictionless digital solutions for Border Force

Border Force wanted to digitise and transform their freight scanning activities at ports. Zaizi was tasked with developing a user-centric, efficient solution to support frontline staff.

We took the lead in a complex multi-vendor environment, using Agile methods and following the Digital Service Standards and accessibility guidelines.

Our team delivered a solution that embedded a partner product and integrated it with other Home Office systems. It was one of the first projects to build the environments and pipelines on Home Office in-house infrastructure.

Transforming Port Operations
‘ScanApp’ has transformed Border Force’s port scanning operations. It has:

  • Standardised the workflow and eliminated paper-based, manual processes

  • Digitised and automated scanning/examination processes with a comprehensive audit trail

  • Allowed officers to view scan data remotely and share information across ports

  • Provided real-time dashboard tracking performance, enabling leadership to monitor throughput/efficiency and use for reporting

  • Created a foundation for future technology integration — Zaizi already investigated how AI can further improve operations

The solution received positive feedback from frontline officers who found it intuitive, user-friendly, and freed their time for critical security work.

Global recognition
Border Force and ScanApp won the prestigious Global Customs Innovation Award. The award highlights cutting-edge solutions and forward-thinking innovations that address the evolving challenges customs administrations face worldwide.

“Zaizi has been great with the day-to-day interactions between themselves and our project team. They understood the brief and worked quickly to establish user needs. The solution has landed well with our users, demonstrating the work put in to get us to this point.”

Improving operational efficiency

Using automation and AI to improve Border Force’s processes

Border Force stakeholders needed to build a new, modernised service that was compliant with the GDS approach to digital service delivery. This sensitive project required security to be ingrained at all stages of the development lifecycle.

Working collaboratively, developing the best solutions
Combining an agile approach with fixed milestones and deliverables, we worked closely with broader programme governance to enable a collaborative working relationship.

Using techniques like automation and artificial intelligence to rethink and upgrade the organisation’s routine processes, we built prototypes and conducted research throughout to ensure our solution met user needs.

The service passed its alpha assessment on its first attempt and has now been fully deployed.

From spreadsheets to success

Transforming a legacy system into an acclaimed digital platform for Home Office

The Home Office team relied on a spreadsheet system to manage highly sensitive applications and needed a secure, digital solution.

We proposed our Transformation Day workshop to rapidly align stakeholders and create an action plan to solve this longstanding, complex problem.

The Home Office team joined the workshop on Monday. Our multi-disciplinary design and technical staff team worked with stakeholders to explore the problem and agree on a 3-month roadmap. By Wednesday, they had prototypes and a roadmap to finally tackle their legacy system.

Award-winning outcomes
The team now has a digitised and secure automated system that eliminates spreadsheets and the need for physical storage. It integrates smoothly with other systems, offering improved data integrity and analytics to inform decision-making.

“Zaizi is receptive to the customer’s pain points, adept at finding the problem space and able to identify the best suitable product for end users. Our collaboration with Zaizi was even recognised with a prestigious award.”

Working with ACE to keep the UK safe

A partnership between the public and private sector, Accelerated Capability Environment (ACE) is designed to solve public safety and security challenges at pace through innovation and collaboration.

Over the past year, we completed several commissions for government organisations through the ACE framework:

  • A 12-week project for Border Force on how AI could improve operations. Our proof of concept used computer vision and anomaly detection to automate processes and demonstrate significant value in driving further efficiencies

  • Defining requirements for a streamlined digital solution providing suitable accommodation for those out on bail

  • Planning the rollout of a programme that will improve the experience of victims of the most serious crimes, with accessibility at its core

Cross-domain workflow: Data sharing & collaboration in secure environments

We work with several government organisations in secure environments, helping keep their sensitive data safe while making it available for legitimate and necessary use.

As well as being a leading supplier of secure and compliant document management solutions, our cross domain workflow solutions enable different departments to share information and collaborate in an assured and repeatable manner.

This allows us to satisfy competing requirements: ensuring your most sensitive information is only accessed by those who need to know, whilst simultaneously providing comprehensive visibility into the effectiveness of your critical business operations.

By introducing our knowledge management and collaboration solutions into your environment, you enable secure access to crucial information, empower informed decision-making, and pave the way for introducing novel AI capabilities.

All of which ultimately strengthens your organisation’s ability to better protect the nation.
